WHAT IS A SKIN BIOPSY?
Skin cancer, infection, eczema, and psoriasis can all be diagnosed with a skin biopsy. At Naperville Internist, Dr. Rachit Marwaha performs skin biopsies for patients in and around Naperville, IL. This simple and fast procedure helps determine the proper treatment for your particular skin issue. During your consultation, Dr. Marwaha will review the type of biopsy he recommends. After the tissue sample has been collected, it will be sent to a lab for analysis. Necessary treatment will be provided after the results come in.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A SKIN BIOPSY?
A skin biopsy usually takes about 15 minutes to complete. Dr. Marwaha will numb the area where the sample will be taken using a local anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel any pain. You may require a bandage or stitches to close up the wound after the biopsy. There are three different types of biopsies available, and Dr. Marwaha may use one of the following:
- Shave biopsy: A tiny sample of the top layer of skin is scraped off with a razor blade
- Punch biopsy: A small puncture is made to include deeper layers of the skin using a circular blade
- Excisional biopsy: A little incision with a scalpel is made to extract a suspicious-looking lump or an area of abnormal skin, including a small amount of normal skin
